If you’re in a relationship today, I’m sure you will be getting/giving various gifts of romance. But why are flowers/chocolates/teddy bears/jewelry often considered to be the perfect Valentine’s gift?

According to The Flower Expert, flowers as gifts in general has been going on since the 1600s. For Valentine’s Day, roses are popular because they symbolize love. This symbolic meaning has several roots, such as red roses being the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. Different color roses have different meanings: red=love, white=purity, yellow=friendship.

This article on ezinearticles.com states that chocolate has been a gift idea for many occasions since the time of the Aztecs. Chocolate is not only limited to “I love you,” but can be used to say sorry, get well, congratulations, or just about any positive message you want to send. Chocolate has also been seen in older cultures as bringing power and pleasure.

Teddy Bears as gifts are also popular. Teddy bears are good because they can make anyone smile, and they come in a wide variety of sizes and colors, so it is easier to find one that fits your/your love’s personality. Not to mention they can be used in combination with other gifts, holding roses, chocolates, and/or jewelry. Some companies like the Vermont Teddy Bear company allow for custom teddy bear creations, lending even more personality to your bear gift, especially with the options to add personalized messages.

Last but not least, jewelry is always a good gift idea for your female love interest. Jewelry is a popular gift for many reasons. It lasts much longer than candy or flowers, you can get it customized, and jewelry has long been a symbol of romance.

So regardless of what stage your relationship is in, you’ve got plenty of options for good gifts today. And gifts are not only limited to romantic partners. Family/friends always love receiving gifts. After all, while Valentine’s Day is undoubtedly geared toward romantic love, there are many kinds of love: family love, friend love, etc.

Okay, I’ll admit. I have more or less believed in Singles Awareness Day in the past. While all the happy couples are in lala land, those of us without significant others have had a history of wallowing in self pity and ice cream.

I’d like to think differently.

I realized the other day that honestly, this is so pointless. Yes, other people are happy, yay for them. Why should I get depressed because my life is different than theirs? Different does not equal worse. Not having a boyfriend does not mean my life has no value. In addition, feeling sorry for myself will accomplish nothing. Will sitting at home with ice cream and sad movies magically create a boyfriend? No. All it will do will be to make me feel sad, and feeling sad is not fun.

Therefore, I propose a new way for singles to spend Valentine’s Day: like any other day. Valentine’s Day is a couple’s holiday. If you want to express the love, buy yourself a bouquet of flowers and box of chocolates, or send e-cards to your family. This website has some nice ideas as well. Just do something happy 🙂
